This classic Weekend Update skit of Will Ferrell as Harry Caray sent me on a mission. A mission to find myself a delicious hot dog that I would eat if it were me and starving.
I’ve had my share of delicious hot dogs having grown up in Jersey City and the nearby NYC metro area. My favorite hot dog from back home is Boulevard Drinks’, sabrett hot dog with their signature chili onions! See below.
A Mission…for the culture.
I haven’t discovered a hot dog that comes remotely close to satisfying my taste for one since I’ve been in Austin….until recently, when I found myself at Mission Dogs: Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs and being Filipino American, I chose the “Jeepney Dog” ….for the culture.

The Jeepney Dog
Take a bacon wrapped hot dog and top it with atchara (a delicious combination of sweet & sour green papaya, ginger, carrot & red pepper slaw) and spicy plaintain ketchup and you have this incredible DOG.

The hot dog in and of itself is huge, couple that with the bacon that wraps it, the toppings, and the ketchup and what you have is an explosion of flavor that combines what I love about a hot dog (juicy with a little bit of a crunch) with familiar flavors from my upbringing as a 1st generation Filipino-American.

Mission….Accomplished
So, to recap, if I was HOT DOG AND starving – would I eat myself?
Yes….especially if I was a JEEPNEY DOG! Actually any of their other specialty dogs sounds like a delicious value prop!
